Cashier Quick Guide: Taking Orders & Payments

  1. Using the POS (Square):
    • Find the Main Item First: If someone orders a “Bacon, Egg & Cheese on Plain,” find “Bacon, Egg & Cheese” in the system before you select “Plain Bagel.”
    • Build Custom Sandwiches: Use “Build Breakfast” if they want something specific (like bacon & egg, no cheese).
    • Classics are Standard: Things like “Bacon, Egg & Cheese” are under “Classics.” They come with American cheese unless changed. If someone orders a complex sandwich, see if it’s just a modified “Classic” first.
    • Bagels are Toasted: Assume all bagels are toasted unless they ask for “No Toast” or “Double Toast.”
    • Specials & Omelettes: Find named sandwiches under “Breakfast Specials” or “Lunch Specials.” Omelettes and Lunch Specials come with a side (ask which one!). Omelettes also come with a buttered bagel (ask which kind!).
    • Cream Cheese: Use the main “Cream Cheese” button for CC sandwiches. Use the other buttons if they just want bagels + CC tubs to go.
    • Lox vs. Lox Spread: “Lox & CC” = plain CC + salmon on top. “Lox Spread” = blended. Double-check which they want! Ask if they want veggies added.
    • Deli Meats: If someone orders “Ham & Cheese,” ask if they want grilled breakfast ham or cold deli ham.
    • Drinks: Customers grab bottled drinks. You make “Prep Drinks” (Coffee, Lattes, etc.). Ask: Hot or Iced coffee? Cream/Sugar?
    • Bulk Orders: For “Just Bagels” (dozen, etc.) or “By Pound” (CC tubs), check with the kitchen first if we have enough!
    • Sides: Home Fries are common. We don’t have hash browns.
  2. Taking Payments:
    • Charge: Hit the blue “Charge” button.
    • Cards/Apple Pay: Customer taps/inserts/uses phone. It’s automatic. If declined, politely ask, “This card isn’t working, do you have another?”
    • Cash: Select the amount they give you. The register opens. Check the change amount quickly! Use the counterfeit pen for 50/50/100 bills. Give change carefully.
    • Other Payments (Lioncash, Moocho, Gift Cards): Follow the specific steps for these (ask for help if unsure!). For Lioncash/Moocho, press “Other Payment Types” on Square after using the separate terminal/app.
    • Splitting Payment: Use the “Split Amount” button if they want to pay with multiple methods (e.g., $5 cash, rest on card).
  3. After Payment:
    • Give the customer the printed order slip with their number. Tell them to hold onto it!
  4. Phone Orders:
    • Answer: “Thank you for calling Bagel Crust.”
    • Take the order, then hit “Save Ticket” -> “New Ticket” -> Type their name followed by “- Called” (e.g., “John – Called”).
  5. Customer Service Basics:
    • Be polite and helpful. Try to solve problems.
    • Common Issues:
      • “Where’s the rest?” – Orders print separately; food comes as it’s ready.
      • “Made wrong” – If it’s simple (like adding a side), do it. If it needs remaking, ask for help (usually remake > refund).
  • Key Takeaway: Focus on the customer, find the main item first in Square, ask clarifying questions (like bagel type, sides, hot/iced coffee), and handle payments carefully. Don’t hesitate to ask a manager or experienced coworker for help!
